Stars lose third straight

Posted January 22, 2012 by in Sports | No comments yet

The Iron Range Ironheads exploded Sunday for three first-period goals and held on to down the Thunder Bay North Stars at the annual SIJHL Showcase in Duluth.

Casey Skolnik, Benjamin Brouillard and Spencer Peratalo scored a pair of power play goals and a shorthanded marker in the first 12:50 of the game to sink the Stars.

Sam Dubinsky and Brennen Dubchak tallied 83 seconds apart in the third, but try as they might, the North Stars could not net the equalizer.

Colton Ishmael made 38 saves to earn the win. Carter McEachern was yanked after just 2:43, allowing goals on his first two shots. However replacement Marc Nother, who allowed the third goal, was tagged with the loss, stopping 25 of 26 shots.

Stars struck

Posted March 26, 2011 by in Sports | No comments yet

It was an unlikely hero that delivered the Wisconsin Wilderness to the brink of the SIJHL final. Hughes, who had nine goals on a team loaded with firepower, broke a scoreless tie seven minutes into the third period on Thursday night as the Wilderness put a foot to the throat of the Thunder Bay North Stars with a 1-0 Game 3 win. Wisconsin, looking to put an end to the North Stars seven year run to the final, also rode a 21-save performance from goalie John McLean, the league’s newly minted goaltender of the year. They’ll look to close out the series at Fort William Gardens on Friday night. Hughes, who backhanded home a puck left in front by teammate Tom Paine, said it was a grind-‘em-out type of win and he was just glad to be in the right spot at the right time. “It was a dirty game, low scoring,” he said. “I saw (North Stars goalie Guillaume) Piche giving up those rebounds and I just thought sit in the middle and I’m going to get a chance. That’s what happened.” One goal was all they needed, he added, knowing the 6-foot-8 McLean had things covered in the Wilderness zone. “Oh yeah, that’s a big confidence builder,” he said of the goal. “We’ve got all the confidence in the world in John. He’s a great goalie. He pulled us through. We didn’t give him much help at the end of the game, but he played big.” Hughes and his teammates aren’t taking anything for granted, despite the 3-0 series lead. They definitely don’t want to head back to Wisconsin for Game 5. “They definitely have all the pressure now. They’re on the ropes. We just have to go out there and have some fun and keep playing the way we are,” he said. Wisconsin coach Rod Aldoff called it a typical playoff outing, a tight contest whose outcome was up for grabs from start to finish. That’s how it should be, he said. “For us it was a typical road game. There wasn’t a whole lot of flow to the game, I think, for both teams. But that’s just the way it is. You grind one out and we put one in when we needed to and our goalie played real well,” Aldoff said. North Stars forward Mitch Forbes, facing possibly his final game in a Thunder Bay jersey, said he told his teammates not to get too down at their situation. “I told them you can’t be disappointed in yourself when you put out an effort like that. They got the bounces. They scored the goal. They played great too. It was just a great game and they found a way to score and we didn’t.” It was Piche who got the better of the Wilderness in a second that saw the Stars take it to their opponent for most of the period. He robbed Paine on a breakaway two minutes in, seconds after the high-scoring forward stepped out of the penalty box. About 11 minutes later he did the same to James Kline, preserving the scoreless tie. The Stars came close early in the third when Dan Usiski hit the post, then once again after Hughes’s marker when Daniel Franks was stopped by McLean on the doorstep, kicking away an attempted backhand. Game time Friday night is half-an-hour later than usual, at 8 p.m. to accommodate the Ontario bantam AAA provincial hockey championship semifinals, also slated for the Gardens. FIRST PERIOD Scoring : No scoring. Penalties : Rempel TB (hooking) 10:03, Usiski TB (slashing) 12:08, Paine WIS (hooking) 20:00. SECOND PERIOD Scoring : No scoring. Ice Dogs smother North Stars on road

Posted December 19, 2010 by in Sports | No comments yet

Something had to give. With the Dryden Ice Dogs on a six-game winning streak and the Thunder Bay North Stars unbeaten in four, when the two teams met at Fort William Gardens, one team’s fate was guaranteed to go in the other direction – at least for one night. Dwight Lee’s second effort midway through the third period ensured it wasn’t Dryden. Lee, who popped home his own rebound past North Star goalie Guillaume Piche, gave the Ice Dogs a 2-1 win, leapfrogging the Stars into sole possession of second place in the Superior International Junior Hockey League season. “It’s really important for us just because we have a two-week long break and we want to go into that break with some momentum and actually carry it through until we get back on the ice,” said Dryden goalie Ian Perrier, fresh off claiming SIJHL player of the month honours for November. Perrier made 26 saves, not many of the ballpark variety, to backstop the Ice Dogs to the win, but wouldn’t take any of the credit. “You know what, I just want to get the wins,” he said. “The most important statistic a goalie can have is wins, so that’s what I’m focusing on right now.” The Ice Dogs (22-12-0) haven’t lost back-to-back games since mid-October, he continued, an accomplishment that has the team riding as high as any winning streak could. “That’s huge for us as a team. It builds a lot of confidence for us and we’re just going to try to keep it going.” It showed. In the face of intense pressure throughout Friday night’s contest, the Ice Dogs did not once quit believing in themselves, calmly sticking to a game plan and never giving up on the play. It’s what earned them the win, said coach Clint Mylymak. Tied 1-1 as the third period started its downhill run toward the end of regulation, Lee collected the puck deep within the North Stars zone, skated across the front of Piche’s crease and fired a backhand that the goalie got a piece of, but couldn’t hang on. Lee grabbed the rebound, fired a shot that bounced off Thunder Bay’s Ryan Henley and sailed over the goaltender’s shoulder and into the net. “That was just going to the net and being persistent with it,” Mylymak said. “It was a good play.” Tom Kuhn gave Dryden the early lead on the power play half way through the first, a man advantage earned when Thunder Bay’s Matt Valley was assessed four minutes for roughing. Mitch Marostica, a hero on Monday when he scored the equalizer in the final minute of regulation, evened the score with 1:16 to go in the second. Mylymak said he expected a low-scoring game from the outset. It always seems to play out that way when the North Stars and Ice Dogs meet. “It’s just one of the matchups that when we play other teams there are goals, but between us it’s always a battle to win 2-1 or 3-2 and they’re a hard team to compete against. They always wait til the last second,” he said. Hanging on almost paid off for the Stars in this one. It appeared the Stars had scored in a goal-mouth scramble, but the officials waved it off, ruling the puck never crossed the line. North Stars coach Todd Howarth said things just didn’t go their way, particularly on the winning goal. “Piche made an really unbelievable save, but it bounced to their stick and went into the air. If you looked at it, Piche got back across again and it rolled off the top of his glove and in,” said Howarth, trying to hold back a tirade against the officials for their call on the non-goal. “I don’t know why you have a goal judge if you’re not going to talk to the judge, because that last one was in.” The Wolves finished the game on a six-on-four, with Piche on the bench after Dryden was called for too many men on the ice. But despite a couple of close chances, they were unable to net the equalizer, and were left hoping to exact revenge in Saturday’s rematch. Game time is 7:30 p.m.   First period Scoring : Dryden, Kuhn (Greene, Lee) 9:45 pp. Penalties : Valley TB (double minor, roughing) 8:18. Second period Scoring : 2. Thunder Bay, Marostica (Zysko, Marsh) 18:44. Penalties: Usiski TB (hooking) 12:48, Greene DRY (cross checking) 16:13. Third period Scoring : 3. Dryden, Lee (McLellan, Greene) 10:44. Penalties : Galbraith DRY (cross checking), Breukelman TB (cross checking) 9:48, Mitchell DRY, Rempel TB (roughing) 10:36, Pelletier DRY (holding) 15:14, Bench minor DRY (too many men, served by Galbraith) 18:55.   Game Data – SOG – Dryden 3-10-9-22, Thunder Bay 7-13-7-27; Power plays (goals-chances) – Dryden (1-2), Thunder Bay (0-2); Goaltenders – Dryden: Ian Perrier, Thunder Bay: Guillaume Piche; A : 250 (estimated).   View full post on Tbnewswatch.com – Sports

Dryden’s early start throttles Stars

Posted December 19, 2010 by in Sports | 1 comment

Special teams were the difference for the Dryden Ice Dogs on Saturday night. The Ice Dogs scored three power play goals – on 17 chances – and once shorthanded, downing the host Thunder Bay North Stars 5-3 at Fort William Gardens. Ben McLellan led the way for Dryden (23-12-0) with a pair of goals, as Dryden took over top spot in the Superior International Junior Hockey League standings, one point ahead Wisconsin. The Wilderness were scheduled to host Fort Frances on Saturday, but icy roads threw a wrench into that plan. Thomas Kuhn, and Dwight Lee with a pair, also scored for the Ice Dogs, who built a 4-0 lead five minutes into the third, only to see the North Stars roll off three straight markers to draw to within one. Daniel Franks, Kyle Breukelman and Daniel Salokari were the North Stars marksmen. Guillaume Piche replaced starter Jay Pelletier in the Thunder Bay net at the 9:45 mark of the first, after Pelletier had allowed three goals. View full post on Tbnewswatch.com – Sports

Stars lose in shootout

Alex Galbraith scored twice, including the winner midway through the third period, leading the Dryden Ice Dogs to a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Thunder Bay North Stars on Friday night. Galbraith beat Guillaume Piche just 47 seconds after the opening faceoff, then after Thunder Bay’s Mitch Galbraith evened the score at the 7:38 mark of the third, the Dryden forward did it again, handing the Ice Dogs their sixth Superior International Junior Hockey League win in a row. With the victory Dryden jumped into a tie for second place in the league standings. The North Stars (13-8-1) fell to fourth. In other SIJHL action Friday night, Tom Paine scored the shootout winner and the Duluth Clydesdales withheld a third period charge by the Sioux Lookout Flyers (5-15-3) and held on to win 5-4. Duluth (6-13-2) held a 4-1 lead with six minutes to go, but Darnell Ferland, Kalan Ewald and Casey Mertens scored before the buzzer to even the score. View full post on Tbnewswatch.com – Sports

Stars game postponed

Posted October 1, 2010 by in Thunder Bay News | No comments yet

The Fort William North Stars will have to wait a little longer to make their 2010-11 Superior International Junior Hockey League debut. Their scheduled opponent, the expansion Wisonsin Wilderness, was unable to complete the journey Wednesday to Thunder Bay, thanks to a broken-down bus. “Neither repairs nor a replacement bus from nearby Duluth could be accomplished in time for the Wilderness to arrive in Thunder Bay at a suitable time for the game,” said league president Ron Whitehead in an email release issued just before 6 p.m. A make-up date will be announced at a future date. The Stars next game is at home next Wednesday against the Sioux Lookout Flyers. Wisconsin is next scheduled to be in Thunder Bay on Oct. 27. View full post on Tbnewswatch.com – Sports
